What a service costs in Moldova: what it includes and what drives the price
In short
A basic service means engine oil, an oil filter, an air filter and a cabin filter, plus a set of checks; on a diesel a fuel filter is usually added. The parts cost depends almost entirely on how many litres of oil the engine takes (roughly 3.5 to more than 8 litres), on the specification the carmaker demands and on the type of filters, so an accurate figure can only be given from the VIN — call us on +373 22 009 350.
What a basic service actually includes
The word "service" covers different things in everyday conversation, so it is worth breaking down into what gets replaced and what gets checked. As a rule, what is replaced: the engine oil, in the quantity and to the specification the carmaker requires; the oil filter, always together with the oil; the air filter, if it has reached its interval or is visibly clogged; the cabin filter, which clogs faster here because of dust; and, on diesel engines, the fuel filter at its own interval. Small but necessary items are added: the sump plug washer, sometimes gaskets or O-rings for the oil filter housing. What gets checked and topped up, without necessarily being replaced: the level and condition of the coolant, the level and age of the brake fluid, the screen wash, the state of the pads and discs, tyre pressures and wear, the condition of the accessory belt, the operation of the lights, the state of the wiper blades and any leaks under the engine. A proper service also includes resetting the service indicator and recording the mileage, so you know where the next interval is counted from.
What makes the cost differ from car to car
The same operation can cost very differently, and not because of the workshop but because of the car. The oil quantity is the dominant factor. A small petrol engine may take around 3.5–4 litres, a mid-sized diesel 5–6 litres, and a large engine or certain dry-sump designs can exceed 8 litres. The gap between four and eight litres, on its own, doubles the most expensive line on the list. The oil specification follows immediately behind. An oil that has to meet a long-life approval, or a low-SAPS class required by cars with a particulate filter, costs more than a general-purpose synthetic, because the additive package is different. There is no clever saving here: the specification is not optional. The type of filters matters more than it seems. An oil filter with a removable housing and a replaceable element is priced differently from a spin-on cartridge, and a cabin filter with activated carbon costs more than a plain one. On diesel engines, the fuel filter adds a line that petrol cars do not have. Finally, it matters whether the car uses a fixed short interval or a condition-based servicing system with long intervals, which requires more expensive oils. And if the interval has been badly overrun, items that would normally have come later may be added to the list.
Major services: what gets added at certain mileages
Not all services are equal. At certain thresholds the list grows, and the budget needs planning in advance. Brake fluid is replaced, at most manufacturers, every two years regardless of mileage, because it absorbs moisture from the air and loses its boiling point. Coolant has its own interval, usually a few years, after which the corrosion inhibitors are exhausted. Spark plugs reach their interval depending on type. The petrol fuel filter, where it is accessible, has an interval too. At high mileage, significant items appear: the timing kit with its pulleys and often the water pump; gearbox oil, on transmissions that specify it; differential oil on all-wheel-drive cars. These are not routine services but planned jobs, and their cost is not comparable with an ordinary service. The practical advice is to look at your car's maintenance plan two intervals ahead. That way you know in advance when a "major" service is due and are not caught unprepared.
How to build a realistic budget
Start from the owner's manual, not from a figure you heard somewhere. Write down exactly: how many litres of oil it takes, which viscosity and which specification or approval are required, the intervals for each filter, and which other fluids have come due. With that list in hand you have two separate components. The first is the cost of parts and consumables, which can be established precisely: these are products with clear prices in MDL. The second is labour, which is paid at the workshop doing the job and which you find out from them. We sell parts and consumables — we do not carry out fitting — so ask the workshop you plan to use about labour, and we will give you a complete list and an exact cost for the parts side. Two recommendations that genuinely save money. Order all the consumables at once rather than one by one: you avoid extra trips, and if the order exceeds 500 MDL, delivery is free — same day in Chișinău and within 1–2 working days across the rest of the country. And keep the invoice and the part numbers you fitted; at the next service you will not have to look anything up, just repeat the list.
Where the money is actually lost
The most expensive decisions in a service are not the ones that appear on the invoice but the ones missing from it. The first is oil with the wrong specification, chosen because it was cheaper. An oil that does not meet the required approval can clog a particulate filter, disturb the variable valve timing system and, on engines with a belt running in oil, degrade the belt itself. The initial saving comes back multiplied. The second is an oil filter kept on "for one more change". A saturated filter opens its bypass valve, and from that moment oil circulates through the engine unfiltered. The filter is always replaced along with the oil. The third is delay. Oil run far beyond its interval loses its additives, oxidises and leaves deposits that block the oil pump pickup — a failure whose cost bears no comparison with a timely change. The fourth is services added without cause: "cleaning" additives proposed for a healthy engine, circuit flushes with no diagnosis to justify them. They do not solve a problem that does not exist. And the fifth, the most mundane, is the cabin filter ignored for years. It costs little, but when clogged it reduces airflow, mists the windows in winter and overworks the blower.
How to get an exact figure for your car
We do not publish an indicative sum for "a service", because it would be misleading: the same list can differ several times over between two cars parked side by side. What we can do is give you an exact cost for the parts within a few minutes. Have three things ready: the car's VIN, the current mileage and, if you know it, what was replaced at the previous service. With those we can establish the oil quantity and specification, the correct filter numbers and what else is due at your mileage, then send you the complete list with prices in MDL. You can reach us on +373 22 009 350, Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 18:00 and Saturday between 09:00 and 14:00. Our warehouse is in Chișinău, in the Botanica district, and orders in the capital go out the same day. We have been the official MANNOL importer since 2014, so on oils and lubricants we work directly with the manufacturer; filters and other consumables you can also look up yourself in the catalogue, using the OEM number of the part currently fitted to your car.
Need the part we wrote about?
The catalogue carries the right products, priced in MDL with delivery across Moldova. If you are unsure about fitment, call us and we will check it against your VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't you show an average price for a service?
Because it would mislead. An engine that takes 3.5 litres of general-purpose oil and one that takes 8 litres of oil with a special approval have completely different costs, even though both are having "a service". A real price can only be calculated from the VIN.
What do you need from me to produce a complete list?
The VIN, the current mileage and, if you remember, the date and content of the previous service. The VIN gives the engine, and therefore the oil quantity, specification and filter numbers; the mileage tells us what else has come due.
Do you carry out the fitting as well?
No, we sell parts, oils and consumables. Have the work done at a workshop you trust; we will prepare the complete parts list with prices in MDL so that you arrive there with everything you need.
Is it worth buying the consumables separately instead of through the workshop?
Often yes, especially if you know exactly what your car requires. You can compare the options available for the same OEM number and choose the quality level you want. Do check in advance whether the workshop accepts customer-supplied parts.
