High oil consumption: causes and how to diagnose it

Consumption of up to roughly 0.5 litres per 1,000 km is considered normal by many manufacturers, and some modern engines state a limit of up to 1 litre over the same distance in their manuals. Above those figures — or if an engine that never used oil suddenly starts to — the typical causes are valve stem seals, stuck piston rings, blocked crankcase ventilation or an external leak, and they should be checked in exactly that order of cost.
How much consumption is actually normal
Oil consumption is not a fault in itself. A thin film inevitably reaches the combustion chamber past the piston rings and down the valve guides, where it burns. Manufacturers publish their own limits, and those are often far more permissive than drivers expect: many manuals mention figures around 0.5 litres per 1,000 km, and some modern engines, especially turbocharged ones, state limits of up to a litre over the same distance. What matters more than the absolute figure is the trend. An engine that has always used a litre every 3,000 km and continues to do so is stable. An engine that needed no top-ups and now asks for a litre every thousand kilometres has changed, and that change has a cause. The second aspect is safety. A level below minimum means insufficient pressure and accelerated wear. Whatever figure the manual gives, checking the level regularly stays mandatory.
How to measure consumption properly
Almost every impression-based estimate is wrong, because the level gets read under different conditions each time. The correct procedure is simple and worth following exactly. Park on level ground with the engine warm, switch off and wait at least five minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump. Pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it fully and only then take the reading. Top up to the maximum mark, note the mileage and the amount added. Repeat the identical procedure, in the same conditions, after 1,000 km. The difference is your real consumption. On cars without a dipstick, use the electronic reading in the dashboard menu, again with the engine warm and on level ground, because the sensor needs stable conditions. Note the type of driving during that period too. An engine worked hard on the motorway uses more oil than the same engine in town, and that difference is not a fault.
Check for external leaks first
This is the cheapest cause and, surprisingly often, the real one. Oil that seeps slowly down the block bakes onto hot components and never leaves a puddle under the car, so it goes unnoticed. The classic locations: the rocker cover gasket, the sump gasket, the drain plug with a reused washer, the oil filter housing or a filter that was not tightened properly, the front and rear crankshaft seals and, on turbocharged engines, the oil return line from the turbo. A practical method: clean the engine area thoroughly, then lay a sheet of plastic or clean cardboard under the car overnight and check in the morning where the drops appear. If nothing shows, a workshop can add a fluorescent dye to the oil and locate the leak with a UV lamp after a few hundred kilometres. If oil disappears with no external trace and no smoke, also consider an internal leak into the cooling system.
Smoke tells you where the oil goes
The colour of the smoke and the moment it appears are the most useful diagnostic clues, but they need careful observation, since many modern engines smoke only faintly and briefly. Blue smoke only on a cold start, clearing after a few tens of seconds, typically points to hardened valve stem seals: oil seeps down the guides overnight and burns at the first start. Blue smoke under sustained acceleration or heavy load points instead to worn or stuck piston rings. Blue smoke after a long downhill stretch with the throttle closed, followed by a cloud when you accelerate again, is another classic sign of guides or seals. Thick white smoke with a sweetish smell, together with a dropping coolant level, is a completely different problem — head gasket or cracked head. Black smoke is a mixture issue, not an oil one. A compression test and, more importantly, a leak-down test confirm the condition of rings and valves before anything is dismantled.
Crankcase ventilation and the wrong viscosity
The crankcase ventilation system vents the gases that blow past the rings and routes them back into the intake. When the PCV valve or the oil separator clogs, crankcase pressure rises and pushes oil past seals and into the intake tract. The result is high consumption, sometimes leaks appearing suddenly at otherwise healthy gaskets, and an intake pipe wet with oil inside. It is a relatively cheap component and worth checking early, especially on turbocharged engines where oil separators fill with deposits. The second frequent cause is the wrong oil. Oil thinner than the manufacturer requires passes more easily by internal parts. Oil kept in the engine too long oxidises and evaporates more readily — there is even a parameter for it, NOACK volatility. And repeated short trips dilute the oil with fuel, which can make the level rise rather than fall, masking the situation entirely.
The right diagnostic order
Work from cheap to expensive, in this order: first confirm the consumption with a proper 1,000 km measurement; then look for external leaks; then check the crankcase ventilation and PCV valve; then confirm that the oil in the engine is exactly what the manufacturer specifies, in both viscosity and specification; and only then move on to smoke, compression and a leak-down test. Until it is resolved, protect the engine: check the level at every fuel stop and keep a litre of exactly the same oil in the boot so you top up correctly rather than with whatever is available on the road. Do not reach for stop-consumption additives first. Those that simply thicken the oil mask the symptom but change the viscosity the manufacturer designed around. Is a litre per 1,000 km a lot?
It depends on the engine. Some manuals state exactly that figure as the acceptable limit, particularly for turbocharged units. But if your engine never used that much before, the increase itself is the signal worth investigating.
Does thicker oil solve oil consumption?
It reduces it temporarily, because thicker oil passes less easily by worn parts, but it does not fix the cause and can slow cold-start lubrication and hydraulic valve timing. It is a stopgap, not a solution.
Why has my oil level risen on its own?
Most often it is fuel dilution, typical of repeated short trips or of interrupted regenerations on diesels with a particulate filter. Diluted oil loses viscosity, so the situation deserves the same attention as a low level.
How often should I check the oil level?
On a healthy engine, once every two or three fuel stops is enough. On an engine that consumes oil, check at every fill-up and always before a long journey.
