Brake fluid DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1: what the ratings mean and when to change

What the number after DOT actually means
DOT stands for Department of Transportation, an American standard setting minimum requirements for brake fluids that has effectively been adopted worldwide. The number does not describe general quality; it describes two temperature thresholds above all: the boiling point of fresh, dry fluid, and the boiling point once the fluid has absorbed moisture, known as the wet boiling point. As orders of magnitude, DOT 3 requires a minimum of 205°C dry and 140°C wet, DOT 4 requires 230°C and 155°C, and DOT 5.1 raises the bar to 260°C and 180°C. DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are all glycol-based and chemically compatible with one another, so DOT 4 can generally replace DOT 3, but not the other way round. There are also high-boiling-point and low-viscosity DOT 4 variants, required by modern ESP and ABS systems that must pump fluid quickly, including in cold weather. The mandatory specification is printed on the reservoir cap and in the handbook — that is where you check, not on the shelf.
Why brake fluid absorbs water
Glycol-based fluids are hygroscopic, meaning they actively attract and hold moisture from the air. Water enters through the reservoir vent, through the pores of the flexible brake hoses and past the seals, even when the system is perfectly tight and has no leaks whatsoever. It is a slow, continuous process that cannot be stopped, only reset by changing the fluid. In Moldova's climate, with humid summers and large day-to-night temperature swings, absorption proceeds at a normal rate, sometimes faster on cars that live outdoors. After roughly two years, water content frequently reaches around 3%, and at 3-4% most manufacturers consider the fluid unfit for use. The water does not simply sit there passively: it collects at the low points of the circuit, in the calipers, exactly where temperatures run highest, and it accelerates internal corrosion of the lines and of the ABS unit's pistons.
What actually happens when the fluid boils
Braking works because the fluid is practically incompressible: you press the pedal and pressure reaches the calipers instantly. Vapour, on the other hand, compresses very easily. When water in the fluid boils and forms vapour bubbles, pressing the pedal compresses the bubbles first and only then acts on the pistons. The sensation is a pedal that sinks almost to the floor, soft and ineffective — a phenomenon known as vapour lock. The dangerous part is that this does not happen during ordinary braking, but precisely in the worst possible situation: long descents, heavy traffic with repeated stops, or driving a fully loaded car. Fluid with 3% water can drop below a 150°C boiling point, a figure a hard-working caliper reaches without difficulty. If the pedal ever goes soft or starts sinking under repeated braking, stop somewhere safe and do not continue until it has been checked.
The two-year rule and how to check
Most manufacturers require the brake fluid to be changed every two years, or in some cases every three years or at a set mileage, whichever comes first. Unlike engine oil, time matters more than distance here: a car covering 5,000 km a year has fluid that ages just as much as one covering 30,000 km, because moisture absorption depends on air, not on driving. Colour is not a reliable criterion. Fresh fluid is straw yellow to almost clear and darkens with age, but dark fluid may still hold little water, while apparently clean fluid may already be saturated. The proper check uses an electronic moisture tester or test strips, available at any serious workshop, and takes a minute. Changing the fluid means bleeding the whole circuit at each wheel, in the order the manufacturer specifies, plus bleeding the ABS unit on cars that require it. This is not a job for improvisation: air left in the system means weak brakes.
Why silicone DOT 5 must never be mixed in
This is where the most expensive confusion of all arises, caused purely by the numbering. DOT 5 is not an improved version of DOT 4 and has nothing to do with DOT 5.1. It is a silicone-based fluid, chemically incompatible with glycol-based fluids. It does not absorb water, which sounds like an advantage, but for exactly that reason any moisture that gets in stays separate, as free droplets that rust the circuit from the inside. Mixed with DOT 3, DOT 4 or DOT 5.1, silicone forms a gel that attacks the seals, blocks the fine passages of the ABS unit and can leave a car with no brakes at all. The repair means flushing the entire system and frequently replacing the seals and the master cylinder. DOT 5 is used almost exclusively on classic motorcycles and military vehicles, never on an ordinary production car unless the manufacturer explicitly calls for it.
Signs the fluid needs changing sooner
There are situations where you should not wait the full two years. If the pedal has gone spongy, if its travel is longer than it used to be, or if braking fades after a few consecutive stops, the fluid is the first suspect alongside air in the system. Likewise, any work that opened the circuit — replacing a caliper, a hose or the master cylinder — calls for bleeding and topping up with fresh fluid from a sealed container. One detail that often gets overlooked: brake fluid absorbs moisture in the bottle too, once opened. A container started a year ago and left in the garage with the cap loosely on no longer matches the specification printed on its label. Buy the quantity the job needs, use it straight away, and do not save the remainder for next time. Brake fluid is also aggressive towards paint: any splash on the bodywork should be washed off immediately with plenty of water. Frequently asked questions
Can I use DOT 4 instead of DOT 3?
Generally yes, since DOT 4 has a higher boiling point and the same glycol base. The reverse should never be done. Still check the reservoir cap: some cars specifically require low-viscosity DOT 4 for ESP.
Can I just top the fluid up instead of changing it?
Topping up only fixes the level, not the ageing of the fluid already in the circuit. If the level keeps dropping, find the cause: either worn pads, or a leak that must be located immediately.
How do I know if the fluid has too much water?
Only with a moisture tester or test strips. A dark colour is a hint, not proof. Above 3-4% water content, the fluid is considered spent and must be replaced completely.
What do I do if the pedal sinks to the floor?
Stop somewhere safe and do not continue driving. It could be air in the system, a leak or boiled fluid. The handbrake can help you slow down in a controlled way, but the car must be checked before being driven again.
