Winter washer fluid: how to choose the right rating

What the number on the bottle means
A marking such as −20 °C or −30 °C indicates the temperature down to which the fluid stays liquid in the form it comes in. It is a working figure, not a theoretical one. Here the first important confusion appears: some products are ready to use and others are concentrates. A concentrate may carry an impressive −60 °C or −70 °C rating, but that value applies undiluted. The label always includes a dilution table showing how much water to add for each temperature threshold. Dilute a −60 °C concentrate one to one and the real rating drops dramatically. The second confusion: the freeze rating is not the temperature at which the fluid stops being useful. Below the stated point the liquid does not turn into a solid block instantly — it first becomes a slush the pump can no longer move. Hence the practical rule: allow a margin of at least 10 degrees below the minimum you expect.
Why water destroys the system
Water is the one everyday liquid that expands when it freezes, by roughly 9%. Inside a closed system that has direct mechanical consequences. The plastic reservoir, already weakened by years of temperature swings, cracks along its seams. The crack stays invisible while the contents are frozen and only becomes obvious during the thaw, when the fluid drains into the engine bay. The washer pump is usually mounted directly on the reservoir and has a thin housing. Ice inside can crack it, and if you operate the washer while the circuit is frozen, the motor stalls and burns out within seconds. That is exactly what most drivers do instinctively on a winter morning. The thin hoses and the nozzles freeze first, because they hold little fluid and sit exposed. An ice plug in a hose can split the connections. On top of that, water left standing since summer grows algae and sediment that block the nozzles, and hard water leaves scale on the pick-up filter.
Summer fluid in winter is dangerous twice over
Summer washer fluid is essentially water with a detergent and sometimes a small percentage of alcohol. It freezes close to zero, so the first problem is identical to the one above: the system blocks and can be damaged. The second problem is more dangerous and occurs while you are driving. Spray summer fluid onto a windscreen at −5 °C and it freezes on the glass within a fraction of a second, forming an opaque layer. The wipers smear it rather than clear it, and visibility disappears completely for several seconds — at 90 km/h that is tens of metres covered effectively blind. The same thing happens on cold glass even when the air temperature is slightly above zero, particularly in the early morning. If the reservoir still holds summer fluid in October, the simplest fix is to use up as much of it as you can with the washer, then add enough winter concentrate to compensate for the water remaining in the system.
Which rating suits our winters
In the Republic of Moldova, ordinary winters bring nights between −10 and −15 °C, while cold spells can push temperatures towards −20 °C or below, especially in the north of the country and in open areas. From that, the practical choice is straightforward. For a car kept in a garage or an underground car park, a fluid rated −20 °C covers most situations. For a car that sleeps outdoors, choose −30 °C: the reservoir follows the outside temperature all night, and morning is precisely when you need the washer most. Composition and safety
Winter washer fluids lower the freezing point using alcohols. Products intended for consumers in the European market are formulated with ethanol or isopropanol, while methanol is tightly restricted in consumer goods precisely because it is highly toxic. Buy from reputable sources, with a complete label and a declared composition. Cheap unlabelled fluid sold by the bottle at the roadside may well contain methanol, and its vapours can enter the cabin through the ventilation system. A few practical safety rules: never pour engine coolant into the washer reservoir — it is viscous, attacks paintwork and leaves a greasy film on the glass; do not store washer fluid in drinks bottles; keep containers closed and out of children's reach. If the fluid leaves oily smears on the windscreen, check the glass itself: a windscreen coated with tree resin or wax from a car wash will streak no matter how good the fluid is.
The seasonal changeover, step by step
Make the change in October, before the first night frosts. Do not wait for the forecast. Use up as much summer fluid as you can by running the washer repeatedly, then add the winter product. For a complete change, some reservoirs have a hose that can be detached for draining, but in most cases adding enough winter concentrate to offset the remainder is sufficient. After filling, run the washer until fresh fluid is clearly coming out of the nozzles. The point is to replace what is sitting in the hoses and nozzles, since those freeze first. Do the same for the rear screen washer and the headlight washers if fitted — they are the most commonly forgotten. Keep a spare bottle in the boot all winter. Salt and road grime in Moldova consume fluid far faster than summer driving does, and an empty reservoir halfway through a journey means an opaque windscreen. And if the blades already streak, replace them along with the fluid: the two work as a pair.

Can I use water with washing-up liquid?
No. It freezes exactly like plain water, and household detergents foam heavily, leave a film on the glass and can attack rubber seals and the paint around the nozzles.
What should I do if the fluid has already frozen in the reservoir?
Do not operate the washer — you risk burning out the pump. Move the car into a warm space for a few hours until it thaws completely, then check the reservoir and hoses for cracks before topping up with winter fluid.
Can a −30 °C fluid be used in summer too?
It can, but there is no economic sense in it, and some winter formulations clean insects less effectively. In summer, a seasonal fluid removes organic residue from the glass better.
