Squealing brakes: what each noise means and when it is dangerous

It indicates no problem whatsoever and shows up on new cars just as often as on old ones. If the noise persists after the car has warmed up, the picture changes. Another case with a mundane explanation: in winter, on salted roads, dust and salt get trapped between the pad and disc and produce an intermittent squeal, sometimes with a faint hiss while coasting. Washing out the wheel arches and making a few firmer stops, done safely, usually resolves it. A simple test: if the noise disappears within the first 5 minutes of driving and does not come back, there is nothing to worry about.
The constant metallic whistle: the wear indicator
The noise that genuinely matters is a sharp, thin whistle that appears under light braking, is clearly audible with the window down, and often weakens or disappears when you press the pedal firmly. That is the metal warning tab on the pad touching the disc as the friction material approaches its limit. The manufacturer fitted it precisely so the driver would find out in good time. The difference from a morning squeal is consistency: the wear indicator sounds every single time, regardless of temperature, weather or time of day, and becomes more insistent week by week. Sometimes it can be heard while coasting too, as the pad lightly brushes the disc. On cars with an electrical sensor there is no noise at all, only a dashboard light, so the absence of a whistle guarantees nothing. In both cases the answer is the same: book the pad replacement within days, not months.
Glazed pads or the wrong friction compound
There is also a squeal that appears while the pads are still thick, sometimes only weeks after a new set was fitted. The usual cause is glazing: the pad surface has polished itself hard and shiny, either after overheating or, conversely, after a bedding-in period that was too gentle, with weak repeated stops. A glazed pad brakes less effectively and vibrates at high frequencies, which is exactly what the ear registers as a squeal. The second cause is the compound itself. Pads with a high metal content are inherently noisier, especially when cold, even though they brake very well at temperature. The third cause is assembly: missing anti-squeal shims, absent springs or ungreased slides let the pad vibrate freely in the caliper. If the noise appeared immediately after brake work, the first thing to check is the fitting, not the part. A new set should not make constant noise once bedded in.
Harsh metallic grinding: stop driving
A deep metal-on-metal grinding noise, like a continuous rasp that intensifies as you press the pedal, means the friction material is completely gone and the pad's steel backing plate is running directly on the disc. Every stop cuts grooves into the disc, braking efficiency drops dramatically, and on a wet road or in an emergency stop the car will not pull up within the distance you expect. At this stage there is no margin left to postpone anything. The car should be driven no further than the nearest workshop, at low speed and with a large safety gap. The repair will no longer be limited to pads: the discs are almost certainly ruined, and if the grinding went on for long, the caliper and its overheated piston can be damaged too. A further sign from the same category is a pedal travelling deeper than normal alongside the metallic noise — that combination calls for stopping immediately.
Knocks, clunks and droning: probably not the brakes
Not every noise from the wheels comes from the brakes. A drone that rises with speed and changes through corners, but does not alter when you brake, almost always points to a wheel bearing. A dull clunk on the first stop after setting off can simply be the pad settling in the caliper, especially if the retaining springs are missing, and is usually harmless unless it repeats at every stop. A rhythmic noise synchronised with wheel rotation that only appears under braking suggests disc thickness variation, and normally comes together with pedal pulsation. Squeaking over bumps rather than under braking belongs to the suspension: bushes, anti-roll bar links, dampers. The practical rule is simple: if you can reproduce the noise without touching the brake pedal, the cause most likely lies elsewhere, and replacing the pads will change nothing.
What you can check yourself in ten minutes
With the car cold and on level ground, look through the wheel spokes at the thickness of the outer pad and the condition of the disc. Friction material visibly thinner than 3 mm, a clear lip at the disc edge or deep grooves are all reasons to book a workshop visit. Then raise the car safely on a jack and turn the wheel by hand: light drag is normal, but a wheel that turns stiffly or binds points to a seized caliper. Another useful check: after 20-30 minutes of ordinary driving, compare the temperature of the wheels. One wheel much hotter than the rest gives away a caliper that is not releasing. Do not touch the disc itself, as it can reach several hundred degrees.
