What the thermostat actually does
The thermostat is a simple valve operated by a wax capsule that expands as it heats. While the engine is cold the valve stays shut and coolant circulates only around a short internal loop. When the coolant reaches the opening temperature — on most cars somewhere between 85 and 95 °C, with the exact value stamped on the thermostat body — the valve opens progressively and lets coolant through the radiator. The point of that delay is not comfort but efficiency. An engine that reaches operating temperature quickly has lower internal friction, burns its fuel more completely, wears less and pollutes less. Below operating temperature, the control unit runs an enrichment map that compensates for fuel condensing on cold cylinder walls. A thermostat costs very little and looks like an entirely ordinary part. The consequences of its failure, in either direction, are not ordinary at all.
Stuck open: the engine that never warms up
This is the gentle failure mode and, unfortunately, the one most often ignored. Coolant flows through the radiator permanently, so the engine simply never reaches operating temperature. In winter the signs are obvious. The temperature needle rises very slowly and stops below the middle, or stays at the bottom altogether; on cars without an analogue gauge, the blue lamp stays lit for minutes on end. Cabin heat is lukewarm at best, and in town, with frequent stops, it can become genuinely cold — then warm slightly on a climb, when the engine produces more heat. The invisible consequences matter more. The control unit keeps the mixture rich and consumption typically rises 5–10%, sometimes more in winter city driving. Unburnt fuel washes the oil film off the cylinder walls and ends up in the sump, diluting the oil and reducing its ability to lubricate. Water produced by combustion condenses in the sump and forms a yellowish emulsion visible on the dipstick or under the oil filler cap. Over time that means accelerated wear and oil that no longer survives its intended interval. On top of that, a chronically cold engine never brings the catalytic converter up to temperature and, on a diesel, prevents the particulate filter from regenerating.
Stuck closed: the mode that destroys engines
Here there is no margin. If the valve stays shut, coolant in the engine never reaches the radiator; it boils locally in the cylinder head while the radiator stays cold to the touch. The temperature climbs fast, often within minutes of starting, and the needle enters the red. What follows depends only on how quickly you stop. The aluminium head expands unevenly and warps, the head gasket gives way, and combustion gases push into the cooling system through the breach — hence bubbles in the expansion tank, pressure that swells the hoses and persistent white smoke from the exhaust. In severe cases the head cracks or the pistons pick up. The difference between a repair costing a few hundred lei and one exceeding the value of the car is measured in minutes of driving with the needle in the red. The rule is simple: a red temperature lamp or a needle in the red means stopping immediately and safely and switching the engine off. The cap is never opened while the engine is hot, because the circuit is pressurised.
How to tell it apart from other causes
Not every temperature problem comes from the thermostat, and one simple test rules out half the possibilities. Start the engine from cold and carefully feel the thick upper radiator hose. Normally it stays cold for a few minutes and then heats up abruptly — that moment is the thermostat opening. If it warms up immediately, almost alongside the engine, the thermostat is stuck open. If the engine overheats while the hose stays cold, it is stuck closed. If the hose warms up normally but the temperature still climbs, the cause lies elsewhere: low coolant level, air in the system (typical after work carried out without proper bleeding), a radiator fan that does not cut in, a radiator blocked externally by insects and leaves or silted up internally, a pump with an eroded impeller, or a head gasket that has already failed. A needle that swings up and down erratically most often points to air in the system or a thermostat opening and closing at random. A faulty temperature sensor can imitate any of these symptoms on the dashboard while nothing is actually wrong with the engine — which is why a real reading from an OBD scanner is worth more than the needle in front of you.
Why removing the thermostat is not a solution
There is an old habit still very much alive: if the engine overheats, simply take the thermostat out and "it runs cooler". As a short-term emergency measure, to get home, that may be acceptable. As a permanent solution, it is an expensive mistake. Without a thermostat the engine runs permanently below operating temperature, exactly as it does with a thermostat stuck open, and with all the consequences described: higher consumption, diluted oil, accelerated wear, weak cabin heat, a catalytic converter and particulate filter that never reach working temperature. In a Moldovan winter, an engine with no thermostat may never once reach normal temperature on a short trip across town. On many engines, moreover, the thermostat does not merely block flow — it directs it. Removed, it can let coolant take the path of least resistance and create hot spots in the head, which is exactly the problem you were trying to solve. If the engine overheats with a new, correctly fitted thermostat, the cause is somewhere else and needs to be found.
What matters when replacing it
Buy the thermostat with the opening temperature the manufacturer specified. Do not choose a "cooler" one hoping for better cooling: the control unit expects a particular operating temperature, and a lower-threshold thermostat can hold the engine in an unsuitable running range and trigger fault codes. The gasket or O-ring is always replaced along with the thermostat, and the mating surfaces are cleaned of old residue. On many modern engines the thermostat is integrated into a plastic housing together with the temperature sensor; there you replace the assembly rather than just the capsule, because aged plastic cracks as it is tightened. After replacement the system must be bled properly. Air trapped in the head forms a lock that perfectly imitates the symptoms of a thermostat stuck closed, and many cars have a dedicated bleed screw or a specific procedure. Refill with the coolant the manufacturer specifies, in the right type and concentration, rather than whatever is at hand — the wrong antifreeze attacks seals and the pump.
