Filled for life: what it actually means
The phrase appears in the documentation of many cars built in the last twenty years and is one of the most misunderstood statements in car maintenance. It does not say the fluid never degrades; it says the manufacturer does not schedule a change within the period it has in view. Automatic transmission fluid, however, works in harsh conditions: high temperatures, intense shearing inside the torque converter, fine particles of friction material shed from the internal clutch packs. The additives deplete and the fluid loses its designed friction properties. On top of that, real conditions here look nothing like the laboratory. Stop-and-go traffic in Chișinău, hills, towing a trailer and summers above 35 degrees push transmission fluid temperature well above average, and temperature is what ages ATF fastest. Anyone keeping a car for more than a few years has practical reasons to change the fluid, even when the manual does not explicitly require it.

Why the ATF specification is not optional
Automatic transmission fluid is not merely a lubricant. It is the hydraulic control medium and, at the same time, the element that determines how the internal clutches slip and engage. The friction modifiers are formulated for the exact material of that gearbox's clutch plates. That is why the specifications are numerous and distinct: Dexron in its versions, Mercon LV, ATF+4, the ZF families, VW's requirements for DSG gearboxes and CVTs, JWS and others. A fluid with a different friction coefficient produces either slip or harsh engagement. Both wear the plates and, over time, clog the system with friction material. A common mistake is reaching for a universal fluid with a long list of specifications on the label. Such products may suit older, tolerant gearboxes, but they do not replace a fluid specifically approved for a modern multi-speed automatic or a CVT. The symptoms that signal trouble
The earliest sign is a brief vibration, like driving over road markings, at low to medium speeds under light throttle. It is usually the torque converter lock-up clutch beginning to slip because the fluid has lost its properties. Other signs: a delay of a second or more between selecting D or R and the car actually moving; a sudden flare in engine speed during a shift, as if the engine were free-revving; harsh, jerky shifts, especially when cold; a burnt smell from the fluid; or the transmission dropping into limp mode, locked in a single gear. A warning light or a code stored in the transmission control unit deserves reading immediately, not at the next service. The practical rule: at the first symptoms, check the fluid before considering major repairs. Many gearboxes have been saved by a timely fluid and filter change, and many have been lost because the symptom was ignored for a year.
Drain and fill, filter, or full exchange
A simple drain through the sump plug generally removes only part of the fluid, because the rest stays in the torque converter and the cooling circuits. That is why workshops either perform two or three successive drains a few hundred kilometres apart, or carry out a machine exchange that replaces nearly the entire volume. Many gearboxes also have an internal filter, sometimes integrated into the pan, which is replaced together with the gasket. On gearboxes with a plastic pan and integrated filter, the pan is replaced as an assembly. One essential detail is the level check. Many modern gearboxes have no dipstick, and the level is set through a control plug at a precise fluid temperature, typically around 35–45 °C, with the engine running and after cycling through the selector positions. An incorrect level produces exactly the same symptoms as worn fluid. What to do concretely
Open the manual and look for two things: the fluid specification and, if given, the recommended interval. If the manual only says filled for life, work from the guideline intervals above, adjusted for how you drive: dense urban traffic, hilly roads, towing or a permanently loaded car all mean a shorter interval. Record the date and mileage of every change, because on automatic gearboxes the service history affects resale value more than on any other component.
