Diesel oil versus petrol oil: what really differs
In short
Many modern oils cover both petrol and diesel engines, and the deciding factor is not the fuel but the exhaust aftertreatment: a diesel with a particulate filter requires a low-SAPS oil from ACEA classes C1, C2, C3 or C4. A normal-ash oil such as A3/B4 poured into a car with a DPF leaves ash that does not burn off during regeneration and visibly shortens the filter's life.
What genuinely differs between the two
A diesel engine produces far more soot than a petrol one, and some of it inevitably ends up in the oil. That is why oils intended for diesels carry a stronger dispersant package: its job is to hold fine particles in suspension, preventing them from clumping together into deposits and sludge. The second aspect is acidity. Combustion produces acidic compounds that the oil has to neutralise. That capacity is expressed by the TBN figure, and diesel oils traditionally carry a larger reserve, precisely because the fuel and the operating regime generate more acids. The third is mechanical stress. High compression ratios and high injection pressures demand a robust oil film, and oils approved for diesel duty are tested in exactly that regime. Modern direct-injection turbocharged petrol engines, meanwhile, have a requirement of their own: protection against low-speed pre-ignition, which the API SP category addresses.
Low SAPS: why ash matters
SAPS stands for sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. All three come from an oil's classic additives, particularly the anti-wear and detergent components. In an engine without sensitive aftertreatment their presence is not a problem — on the contrary, those additives protect the parts. The problem starts when the car has a particulate filter. During regeneration the filter burns off accumulated soot, converting it to gas. Ash from the oil does not burn. It stays in the filter, builds up layer by layer and irreversibly reduces the usable volume. A filter that should have lasted hundreds of thousands of kilometres clogs far sooner. Phosphorus has a separate effect: over time it reduces the efficiency of the catalytic converter. That is why ACEA C class oils carry strict limits on all three elements. The same reasoning applies to modern petrol engines fitted with a GPF, increasingly common among cars recently imported from Europe.
Universal oils: how they work
Today the vast majority of passenger car oils are formulated for both engine types. A 5W-30 in ACEA class C3, carrying approvals such as MB 229.51 or VW 505.01, normally covers both petrol and diesel engines — because it was tested on both. So the right question is not whether your car is petrol or diesel, but which aftertreatment systems it has and which specification the manufacturer requires. An older diesel without a particulate filter may call for a classic A3/B4. A modern diesel with a DPF will almost certainly call for a C class. An older naturally aspirated petrol engine may run on A3/B4, while a modern petrol with a GPF will again call for a C class. This logic explains why looking for a diesel oil on the shelf makes little sense. Look for the specification in your manual and the rest resolves itself.
What happens if you get the class wrong
The most frequent and most costly case: a normal-ash A3/B4 oil in a car with a DPF. Nothing dramatic happens immediately, which is what makes the mistake dangerous. The effect accumulates: the filter loads with ash faster, regenerations become more frequent, every regeneration means extra fuel injected and therefore more oil dilution. In the end the filter needs cleaning or replacement long before its time. The reverse case — a C class oil with lower high-temperature viscosity in an older engine designed around A3/B4 — is less dramatic but still wrong if the manufacturer does not approve it, because the oil film under heavy load is dimensioned differently. The third case is a truck oil from the E classes in a passenger car. Those oils are built around different intervals, different soot loading and different ash levels, so they are not an upgrade.
Regeneration, short trips and the drain interval
Diesel cars used mainly around town face a specific problem: the particulate filter tries to regenerate, but the journey ends before the process completes. An interrupted regeneration leaves unburnt fuel in the oil, diluting it. Dilution lowers the effective viscosity and, over time, the level in the sump may even rise. If you see the level rising, if the oil smells of diesel, or if the car enters regeneration cycles frequently, the drain interval needs shortening regardless of what the service counter says. In practice, for a diesel used mostly on short trips around Chișinău, an interval of 7,000–8,000 km is more realistic than 15,000 km. And whenever you can, a 20–30 minute run at steady speed on an open road helps the filter finish its regeneration. The fuel filter deserves attention as well, since it directly protects the high-pressure injection system.
How to choose in practice
Three steps, in order. First, establish whether the car has a particulate filter. Nearly all Euro 5 and newer diesels do. Second, read the specification in the manual or on the filler cap — an ACEA class and possibly a manufacturer approval. Third, choose a viscosity permitted for the local climate from those listed.
