What a kit contains and why it all goes together
A timing belt kit contains the toothed belt, the tensioner pulley and, depending on the engine, one or more idler pulleys. They all share the same age and the same load: the pulley bearings wear in parallel with the belt, and a pulley with play can destroy a new belt within a few thousand kilometres.
That is why the belt is never replaced on its own. The labour is identical — removing the covers, the engine mount and the pulleys — and the saving made on one idler turns into a second full job. Many kits also include single-use bolts, which are never reused.
The interval is measured in kilometres and in years
Manufacturers give a dual interval, for example 120,000 km or 6 years. The second criterion is the one most often ignored. The belt's rubber ages through oxidation and thermal cycling even while the car sits in a garage: it loses elasticity and cracks between the teeth.
On a second-hand car with no service history, assume the timing belt has never been replaced. A kit costs little against the risk, and a visual inspection offers no certainty — a belt can look acceptable and still fail on the next cold start.
Interference engines and wet belts
Most modern engines are interference designs: the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different moments. If the belt snaps or jumps a few teeth, contact is immediate — bent valves, damaged guides, sometimes pistons and cylinder head. The repair means taking the head off.
A category of its own is the belt running in an oil bath, fitted to engines such as the Ford EcoBoost 1.0 or PSA PureTech 1.2. These have shorter intervals and are sensitive to the quality and age of the oil: degraded oil attacks the belt material, and the shed particles can block the oil pump pick-up screen.
Warning signs and the water pump
A steady rumble or whine from behind the timing cover that changes with engine speed usually points to a pulley bearing. Other signs: traces of oil or coolant around the belt — a leak that softens the rubber — plus difficult starting or rough running if the belt has jumped a tooth.
Where the water pump is driven by the timing belt, it is replaced at the same time as a matter of course. Its bearing has roughly the same service life, and a pump that fails 20,000 km after a kit change means repeating the same labour, plus the risk that leaking coolant ruins the new belt.
Belt or chain: what gets replaced and when
A timing chain is designed for a longer service life, but it is not a lifetime part. It stretches over time, and the hydraulic tensioner compensates only up to a point. The classic sign is a metallic rattle lasting a few seconds on a cold start, sometimes followed by camshaft correlation fault codes.
A worn chain deserves the same attention as a belt: ignored, it can jump the sprocket teeth with the same consequences. The difference is that it has no fixed interval — its life depends directly on how regularly the oil is changed, since a chain wears fastest in an engine running degraded oil.

Frequently asked questions
Can the timing belt's condition be judged visually?
Only partly. Transverse cracks, frayed edges and oil traces are visible, but the state of the textile cord and the play in the bearings are not. A belt can look fine and still be at the end of its life, so inspection does not replace the interval.
What happens if the timing belt snaps?
On an interference engine — which covers most modern engines — the valves strike the pistons in a fraction of a second. The usual outcome is a set of bent valves and removal of the cylinder head. On non-interference engines the motor simply stops without mechanical damage.
Does the kit need changing even at low mileage?
Yes. The term in years is as binding as the one in kilometres, because the belt material ages regardless of distance covered. On a car doing 5,000 km a year, the age of the belt is the deciding criterion.
