The difference starts with the base oil
Every engine oil is made of a base oil plus an additive package. Mineral base oil comes from refining crude and retains an uneven molecular structure. Synthetic bases — API Groups III, IV (polyalphaolefins, PAO) and V (esters) — are built by chemical processes that produce uniform molecules with predictable properties.
A semi-synthetic oil blends mineral and synthetic bases in proportions that differ from one producer to another. There is no regulated threshold, which is why the commercial name tells you less than the specification on the label.
What it means in practice
The difference shows most clearly at the extremes. When cold, a synthetic 5W-30 reaches the bearings within seconds, while a semi-synthetic 10W-40 flows more slowly — relevant in Moldovan winters, where a morning can mean -15 °C. When hot, the synthetic base resists oxidation better and evaporates less, so consumption between top-ups is lower.
The second practical consequence is the drain interval: synthetic oils typically support 10,000–15,000 km, semi-synthetics 7,000–10,000 km. On a modern turbocharged engine, where the oil also cools the turbo bearing, thermal stability is a requirement rather than a luxury.
When semi-synthetic is still the right call
On an older naturally aspirated engine designed for 10W-40 and past 150,000 km, semi-synthetic is a rational choice. Wider clearances and tired piston rings get along better with a slightly thicker film, and oil consumption stays under control.
Real economics matter too: if the drain interval is short anyway because of how the car is used, an expensive synthetic will never use up its service life. The rule that is never broken stays the same — if the manual demands a specification only a synthetic meets, semi-synthetic is not an option, whatever the engine's age.
Three widespread myths
“Synthetic oil causes leaks.” Synthetic oil does not attack modern seals. What sometimes happens is that its detergents clean away the deposits that were plugging an already cracked seal, and a pre-existing leak becomes visible. The problem was there beforehand.
“Once you switch to synthetic you can't go back.” False: engine oils are miscible, and returning to a semi-synthetic with the correct specification has no adverse effect. And the third myth — “a more expensive oil is always better” — an oil without the approval your carmaker requires does not become suitable because it costs more.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch from semi-synthetic to synthetic on an old engine?
Yes, provided the specification is respected. On engines past 200,000 km that already use some oil, switch gradually and watch the level over the first 1,000 km. Synthetic oil cleans deposits, and a tired seal may start to weep.
Does semi-synthetic oil damage a modern engine?
What damages an engine is the wrong specification, not the base type. If your car requires ACEA C3 low SAPS and you pour in a 10W-40 ACEA A3/B4, the particulate filter clogs. Always check the class and approval, not the marketing label.
What does “full synthetic” on the label mean?
That the base oil is entirely synthetic, with no mineral component. In Europe, oils based on hydrocracked Group III are also sold as synthetic, so the term alone does not describe the formulation — the ACEA and API classes and the carmaker approvals do.
