Handbrake not holding: causes, checks and what it means at inspection

How to check properly whether the handbrake really fails
The basic test is done on a real slope, not on flat ground. Stop the car on an incline, pull the handbrake, take it out of gear and gently release the footbrake. If the car starts moving, the brake is not doing its job. Repeat the test facing both directions, nose up and nose down: on some systems the difference is obvious. A second clue comes from the number of clicks on the lever. On a correctly adjusted system, the brake bites somewhere between 3 and 7 clicks, depending on the model. If the lever travels all the way up with no resistance, the cable has stretched or something has failed inside the mechanism. If it bites on the first click and the wheels stay slightly dragging, the adjustment is too tight and the drums will overheat. On the foot-operated parking brake used by many American and Japanese models, the logic is identical — only the control differs.
The cable: stretched, rusted or seized
Handbrake cables stretch over time because they are loaded every time the lever is pulled and run through outer sleeves exposed to water, road salt and mud. On cars driven through winters on salted roads, the sleeve rusts internally, the cable starts moving stiffly, and eventually stays partly tensioned even after the lever is released. The typical symptom is a rear wheel that stays hot after a drive, or a burning smell as you get out of the car. Many systems have an adjuster, usually under the centre console or beneath the car, that lets you take up the slack. But adjustment is only the correct answer when the rest of the mechanism is healthy. Tightening the cable to compensate for worn shoes or a seized mechanism gives you permanently dragging brakes, higher fuel consumption and accelerated wear. A cable with broken strands, one that does not return on its own, or one with a cracked sleeve gets replaced, not adjusted. On most cars both cables are changed together.
The seized mechanism: drum or screw-type caliper piston
On cars with rear drum brakes, an internal self-adjusting mechanism compensates for shoe wear. If that mechanism jams with rust or friction dust, the shoes stay too far from the drum, and the cable has to be pulled further and further to bring them together. The result is exactly the feeling of a handbrake that no longer holds, even though the cable seems fine. On cars with rear discs and an integrated parking brake, the piston contains a screw that pushes the pads mechanically. This design frequently seizes on cars that sit unused, with the piston no longer retracting or no longer extending fully. In both cases, cleaning, greasing the contact points and replacing tired springs fixes the problem more often than people expect. One easy sign to spot: after a normal drive, one rear wheel is noticeably hotter than the other, or the disc shows a bluish overheating tint.
Worn rear shoes and pads
The handbrake acts on the same friction surfaces that brake the car in motion, or, on some models, on separate shoes hidden inside the rear disc hub — the drum-in-hat design. When the material has thinned out, there is not enough contact to hold the car on a slope, even if normal braking still feels acceptable, because the front axle compensates while driving. The problem is more common than expected on cars used mostly in town: the rear shoes do little work, get covered in rust and lose effectiveness through glazing rather than wear. Another frequent case is an oval or deeply rusted drum that only makes contact in places. Checking requires removing the drum or the wheel, so it is not something you can judge from outside. If the car has been standing unused for months, there is one more scenario: the shoes can bond to the drum, and the first attempt to move produces a loud bang. That is not a fault, but the surfaces are worth inspecting.
The electronic parking brake: different causes, different rules
Newer cars replace the lever with a button and two electric actuator motors on the rear calipers. When the system has a problem, a dashboard message or a dedicated warning light normally appears, and the brake may stay locked or refuse to engage. The usual causes are a burnt-out actuator motor, corroded connectors, low battery voltage, or a module that faulted after work was carried out without putting the system into service mode. One detail every owner should know: on these cars the rear pads cannot be changed mechanically, only after the pistons have been retracted electronically with a diagnostic tool. Trying to force the piston back with pliers destroys the internal mechanism. If the electronic brake will not release and the car has to be moved, most models have an emergency release procedure described in the handbook, and it differs from brand to brand. Do not improvise: check the handbook or take it to a workshop with a scan tool.
Why it matters at the periodic technical inspection
At inspection, the parking brake is tested on a roller brake tester and must produce a minimum force relative to the vehicle's mass, with only a small permitted difference between the left and right wheels. A brake that holds on one side only will fail the test even if it subjectively feels fine, and a large imbalance is precisely the symptom of a seized cable or jammed mechanism on one wheel. Beyond the test, the handbrake has a genuine safety role: it holds the car on a slope when an automatic gearbox is in P, spares the transmission parking pawl, and remains your only reserve if the main hydraulic circuit fails. It is worth using at every stop, including on automatics, precisely so the mechanism stays free and does not seize with rust.
