How to read a VIN: what the 17 characters mean

A VIN is exactly 17 characters: positions 1–3 form the WMI, the manufacturer and region code, positions 4–9 form the VDS, the vehicle description, with position 9 used as a check digit, and positions 10–17 form the VIS, where 10 gives the model year, 11 the plant and 12–17 the serial number. A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q, precisely so they cannot be confused with the digits 1 and 0.
The structure, character by character
The VIN, short for Vehicle Identification Number, is internationally standardised and always has 17 characters, split into three blocks. The first three form the WMI, the World Manufacturer Identifier. Position one gives the geographic region: W for Germany, V for France or Spain, Z for Italy, S for the United Kingdom, Y for Sweden, J for Japan, K for South Korea, and 1, 4 and 5 for the United States. The next two narrow it to the manufacturer and, on some brands, to the vehicle type. Characters 4–9 form the VDS, the descriptor section. Here the manufacturer encodes, to its own scheme, the model, the body type, the restraint system and very often the engine and transmission. There is no single standard for these positions, which is why a generic online decoder can get things wrong: every brand uses its own table. Position 9 is reserved for the check digit. Characters 10–17 form the VIS, the identifier section. Position 10 is the model year, position 11 is the assembly plant, and the last six, 12–17, form the unique serial number of that individual car.
Why there is no I, O or Q, and what the check digit does
The standard excludes the letters I, O and Q from a VIN entirely. The reason is strictly practical: on a stamped plate or a photocopied document, I is confused with 1, O with 0, and Q with either a zero or the letter O. The useful conclusion for you: if you think you see an "O" in a VIN, it is a zero, and if you see an "I", it is a one. Position 9 is the check digit. It is calculated mathematically from the other 16 characters using a weighted algorithm, and the result is a digit from 0 to 9 or the letter X, which stands for the value 10. If any character is transcribed incorrectly, the check digit no longer matches and the error is caught automatically. One clarification that avoids confusion: the check digit is mandatory for vehicles intended for the North American market, and many European manufacturers use it, but not all. A European VIN that "fails" the check digit test is not necessarily fake; it may simply come from a manufacturer that does not apply the rule. What remains universally true is the 17-character length and the absence of I, O and Q.
The model year: the character in position 10
Position 10 encodes the model year with a single character, in a cycle that repeats every 30 years. It uses the letters A to Y, excluding I, O and Q as well as U and Z, plus the digits 1 to 9. The scheme runs as follows: the letters covered 1980 to 2000, the digits 1–9 covered 2001 to 2009, and from 2010 the letter cycle began again. So A is 2010, B is 2011, C is 2012, D 2013, E 2014, F 2015, G 2016, H 2017, J 2018, K 2019, L 2020, M 2021, N 2022, P 2023, R 2024, S 2025 and T 2026. Two warnings. First: the model year is not the calendar year of manufacture. A car built in October may already carry the following model year, which explains discrepancies between the VIN and the registration papers. Second: for parts selection the model year is indicative only, and the exact production date on the identification plate is what settles matters when a catalogue splits parts by month.
Where to find the VIN on the car and in documents
There are always several locations, and cross-checking them is especially useful on a used purchase. On the car, the most visible place is the lower corner of the windscreen on the driver's side, through a small window in the dashboard. The second is the vehicle identification plate, usually on the driver's door pillar or door frame, which also shows the maximum permitted weights, the paint code and often the production date. The third is the marking stamped directly into the bodywork: under a front seat, in the spare wheel well, on the front crossmember or in the engine bay, depending on the make. In documents, the VIN appears on the registration certificate and the vehicle identity document, as well as on the insurance policy and the roadworthiness test papers. If the numbers on the body, on the plate and in the documents do not match perfectly — down to a single character — that is not a typo to overlook. Re-stamped markings, a recently riveted plate or fresh paint around the stamped area are serious reasons for further checking before buying.
What the VIN tells you when buying parts, and what it does not
For parts, the value of the VIN is that it removes guesswork. From it, manufacturers' catalogues can reconstruct the factory configuration of that individual car: the exact engine, the gearbox type, the braking system fitted, whether air conditioning is present, the suspension variant, sometimes the paint code and the options that change parts. That resolves precisely the most common categories of error: the same car with two brake disc diameters, cabin filters with and without activated carbon, different radiators depending on the climate system. It is just as important to know what the VIN does not say. It describes the car as it left the factory, not as it stands today. If a previous owner fitted a different calliper type, a different alternator or replaced an assembly with the version from a related model, the catalogue cannot know. Why you never publish the full VIN
A VIN is not an absolute secret — it is visible through the windscreen to anyone who walks up to the car — but publishing it in a listing, a social media post or an open group creates concrete risks. The first is vehicle identity cloning: a valid VIN belonging to a real, legitimate car can be used to disguise the origin of a stolen vehicle or to produce false documents. The second is fraudulent listings: scammers copy the VIN and photographs from a genuine advert to lend credibility to an offer that does not exist. The third is access to vehicle history: through commercial services, a VIN opens up mileage, damage and service records that concern the owner alone. The practical rule is simple and restricts nothing about normal use: pass the VIN directly and privately to those with a legitimate reason — your parts supplier, your workshop, your insurer, a serious buyer in an advanced conversation. If you are selling and still want to show transparency, mask the last digits in the public advert and give the full code only in private conversation. In everyday use, yes. The term "chassis number" dates from the era when a body sat on a separate frame, and today it refers in practice to the same 17-character code that documents call the VIN.
Is a VIN with fewer than 17 characters valid?
For vehicles built after international standardisation, no — the length is fixed. Very old vehicles, made before the standard took effect, may have shorter identification numbers in a different format that cannot be read by these rules.
Can I trust free online VIN decoders?
