Where to find the code, in order of reliability
The most reliable source is the part that came off your own car. Almost every filter has a manufacturer code printed on its body or side label, sometimes alongside the carmaker's OEM number. Photograph it before you throw the part away, because that is exactly the reference you will need next time. If someone else replaced the part before you, the code tells you what was fitted, not necessarily what the factory specifies, so it is worth cross-checking. The second source is the vehicle documentation or the invoice from the last dealer service, where original numbers appear. The third, and the most reliable when you have nothing else, is the VIN, the 17 characters on the windscreen, the door pillar or the registration document. The VIN identifies the exact engine, year and equipment level, and that matters more than it seems: the same model can take two completely different oil filters depending on the engine code or even the month of production.
OEM, aftermarket and cross-reference: what each means
The OEM number is the code the carmaker assigns to the part fitted on the production line. It is a catalogue reference, not a manufacturer: the filter carrying that number is still made by a specialist supplier and simply packaged under the car brand. The aftermarket code is a parts manufacturer's own number, following its own numbering logic. The part may be technically identical, sometimes even off the same production line, but the code looks completely different. Cross-reference, or equivalence, is the link between the two: the table that says a carmaker's OEM number corresponds to a particular aftermarket code. This is where the frequent confusion between equivalence and substitution arises. A correct cross-reference means the parts share the same critical dimensions, the same thread, the same filtration area and the same bypass valve characteristic. If any one of those differs, the part is not equivalent even if it physically fits.
How to use the code search on the site

Enter the code without spaces or dashes, or try both variants: some manufacturers use them and others do not. Do not include packaging prefixes or batch numbers printed next to the code, as those change from one production run to the next. If a long code returns nothing, try just its central, meaningful portion. Why looking the same does not mean fitting
This is the most expensive assumption in the whole process. Two oil filters can share the same diameter and the same thread, yet have bypass valves calibrated to different pressures. One with too low an opening pressure lets unfiltered oil circulate; one with too high a pressure can starve the engine when cold. Neither difference is visible to the eye, and neither shows up straight away. On air filters, a few millimetres of height difference means the seal does not close and unfiltered air bypasses the element. On cabin filters, an element slightly too small looks correctly fitted but leaves a free channel along the edge. On fuel filters there are differences in working pressure and in quick-connect fittings that look identical. The simple rule is this: fitment is confirmed by code and catalogue application, never by visual comparison in a shop or from a photograph.
Final checks before fitting
When the part arrives, compare it against the one you removed before you fit it. Check the outer diameter, the height, the thread or connector type, the position and thickness of the seal, and, for cabin and air filters, the shape and fitting direction. If anything differs, stop before fitting: an unfitted part can be exchanged, one that has been fitted and covered in oil cannot. Save the part code in a note on your phone or in a service book, along with the mileage and date. At the next service, ordering takes a minute instead of half an hour of searching. If your car has been modified or has an engine that is unusual for this market, note the engine code as well. Special cases: imported cars and rare engines
Many cars in Moldova are imported, and that creates situations that complicate identification. A car brought from the USA may have an engine that was never sold in Europe, so European codes simply do not apply. Asian-market models can carry the same commercial name with different components. In these cases the VIN is essential, and it is sometimes supplemented by the engine code stamped on the block or written in the registration document. The second frequent case is a car with a swapped engine, or one where past repairs substituted components from another model. Here even the VIN guarantees nothing, and the only reliable method is the code on the removed part or direct measurement of the dimensions. Do not guess from the year of manufacture and engine capacity: those are the two pieces of information that most often lead to the wrong part.
