How to confirm a part actually fits your car

Why the model name is never enough
"Golf 6, 1.6 diesel" looks like a complete description. In reality it leaves more part options open than you would expect. The first reason is the engine range. The same model is sold with several engines at once, and those differ in filters, plugs, belts, radiators and often even in the braking system, because a more powerful version gets larger discs. The second reason is the facelift: halfway through a model's commercial life, body parts, lights and sometimes the suspension change, while the name stays the same. The third reason, the most awkward, is mid-production change. Manufacturers switch a component supplier in the middle of a model year and mark the difference only with a chassis number range or a production date. Two cars that look identical, built three months apart, can carry different callipers. The fourth is market variants: the same car built for Eastern Europe, Germany or the Middle East can receive different radiators, cabin filters or batteries. Many cars in Moldova are imported second-hand from different markets, which makes this point very real.
The VIN: identifying your exact car
The VIN is the only code that describes the individual car rather than the model. Its 17 characters carry the manufacturer, the model family, the body type, often the engine, the model year, the plant and the serial number. Starting from it, the manufacturer's catalogue can reconstruct the exact list of parts the car left the factory with, including fitted options. You will find it on the registration certificate, in the vehicle identity document, on the identification plate on the driver's door pillar or under the bonnet, and very often stamped directly into the body, visible through a window in the corner of the windscreen. It is worth checking that the VIN in the documents matches the one on the body — on a used purchase, a mismatch is a serious signal. Two important caveats. The VIN tells you what the factory fitted, not what the car has now: if a previous owner swapped an assembly for a different variant, the catalogue has no way of knowing. And, just as important, the VIN is information about your vehicle that is not published on social media or in listings; it is passed directly to a seller or a workshop.
The engine code and the build date
For many parts, the engine code is more useful than the model name. It is a short combination of letters and digits — typically three or four characters on German makes — that identifies the exact constructional variant of the engine: block, head, injection system, accessory layout. You will find it on the registration document under engine type, on a sticker on the engine cover or on the belt, and stamped directly on the block, usually where it meets the gearbox. If the sticker has gone, the stamping remains. The build date matters separately from the model year. One calendar year of sales can cover two configurations, and catalogues often split parts with wording such as "up to 05/2013" and "from 06/2013". The real production date appears on the vehicle identification plate. Finally, body style and transmission change parts that look common: an estate has a different rear braking arrangement from a saloon, and an automatic version may use a different radiator and different engine mounts.
The OEM number on the old part and cross-reference search
The most reliable check remains the physical one: remove the old part and read the codes stamped or printed on it. You will usually find two kinds of number. One is the OEM number assigned by the carmaker — it identifies the exact position in the vehicle's architecture. The other is the number of the supplier that actually manufactured the part for the factory. Both are useful. The OEM number unlocks cross-referencing: from it, any serious parts manufacturer can point to the equivalent in its own range. A few traps are worth knowing. Codes sometimes carry suffixes marking revisions of a part, and those are usually backward compatible, but not always. The digit 0 and the letter O are easily confused in stamped markings, as are 1 and I, or 5 and S — photograph the code rather than transcribing it from memory. And if the old part was itself once replaced with the wrong item, its code perpetuates that error; which is why checking by VIN and checking by code are used together, not instead of one another.
Details that change the part on the same engine
Even with the right VIN, engine and year, some categories still have multiple versions. They are worth knowing, because this is where most returns originate. On brakes, what counts is the disc diameter, measured with callipers on the old part, the nominal thickness, the type (vented or solid) and whether there is an integrated ABS ring or an electrical wear sensor. The same pads can exist with and without a sensor, and fitting the wrong version leaves a warning light permanently on. On filters, shape and height matter: many oil filters share the same thread and seal but differ in height, and many cabin filters come in plain and activated-carbon versions with slightly different thicknesses. On radiators and condensers, the presence of air conditioning changes the part. On wheel bearings, it matters whether the ABS sensor is integrated into the bearing or separate. The practical rule: measure whatever can be measured, count whatever can be counted — the number of ribs on a belt, the number of pins on a connector, the number of mounting holes — and photograph the old part from two angles before ordering.
A three-step check before ordering
Step one: gather the data. The full VIN, the engine code, the month and year of build, the body style and the transmission type. Five minutes with the registration document in hand eliminates most errors. Step two: compare two independent sources. Search for the part by OEM number using the site's code search and check the description of the result against what you measured on the car. If the two agree, the chance of error becomes small. Frequently asked questions
Is the VIN enough on its own to order any part?
For most parts, yes. The exceptions arise where the car has been modified away from its factory configuration, or where the catalogue offers several equivalent versions. In those cases the code on the removed part settles it.
Where do I find the engine code if the sticker has gone?
On the registration document under engine type, and stamped directly on the engine block — usually near where it joins the gearbox, sometimes under a layer of paint or dirt that needs gentle cleaning.
What if the code on the old part cannot be found anywhere?
It may be an internal supplier number rather than the OEM one. Look for a second marking on the part, note the manufacturer's brand and send us clear photographs along with the VIN; in most cases the part can be identified from the image and its dimensions.
Can I use an "almost identical" part from a related model?
Sometimes it genuinely is the same part under a different commercial number, and a cross-reference search will confirm that. But "almost identical" judged by eye is not a criterion: on braking, steering and suspension components, a difference of a few millimetres is a difference in safety.
